The places we are visiting on this journey…

There is nothing quite like India, it is an incredible meeting place of the spiritual and material worlds. The true spiritual history of India goes back well over 5000 years with some estimates at 10,000 years. It is the birthplace of Yoga, Ayurveda  and Kirtan. The practice and culture of Yoga have expanded around the globe and are literally changing the world. Our journey is a cultural tour in many ways; to immerse ourselves in, to understand and experience this beautiful ancient culture. But even more so it is a spiritual pilgrimage, it is a journey towards the source of this spiritual wisdom. I love the adventure of going to India and guiding people through India. It has been a highlight for me over the last 20 years. India is vast and there are so many places to visit and so many places have great significance. Each tour I do is slightly different, there are some places that I return to again and again on  each journey  and I always add some new places and experiences. Our itinerary is full, but I cannot fit all of what we will do onto this page, for various reasons, but an important reason has to do with the magic of India – there are so many amazing invitations and possibilities that arise once you are there, that we always has to be some space for that. But in addition to the itinerary i am sharing with you,  i wanted to also share a little with you about the significance of each place or area that we will visit.
North India March 17 – 25

New Delhi is the capital of India and a part of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. New Delhi is the seat of all three branches of the government of India, hosting the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, and the Supreme Court of India. Though there are definitely some great things to do and see in Delhi, it is mainly a place that you will fly in and out of. It is a massive city and which of the day it is hard to get around. There are very good hotels close to the airport so you don’t have to go into the density of New Delhi unless you wish too. One of my dear friends in India Khem Singh, runs a small tour company and I completely trust him. I would recommend him if you would like to spend a few days sightseeing in Delhi he can take you on a personal tour of the things that are worth seeing. This is where you will arrive on your international flight and you will either make a connecting flight to Darragh Dune right away or spend the night in a hotel. I will help each of you with that.

Rishikesh, Ganga River & Surrounding Area

Rishikesh is a town in the foothills of the Himalayas where the Ganga River comes down from the high Himalayas. It has become a lot busier over the years, but there is still a beautiful aura of peace in many parts of Rishikesh and even the busy parts are interesting and fun. The literal meaning of Rishikesh is the city or place of the Rishi’s. The rishis are considered the original yogic seers and wisdom keepers, some people say that rishikesh is the birthplace of yoga, it is certainly one of the places that yoga began and has flourished over the years. There are so many ashrams, teachers and beautiful experiences here, but hands-down the most magnificent part of Rishikesh is the Ganga river, here you will meet her and have the opportunity for a sacred dip or two in the Ganga river. This sacred river captured the minds and hearts of the ancient people as the source of life, in Indian mythology, Ganga is also synonymous with the flow of divine wisdom and Shakthi. In Lord Shiva’s matted dreadlocks is a serpent and that serpent is Ganga, the flow of divine wisdom coming to earth or ‘kundalini’.  There are so many things to do in Rishikesh that I will have a hard time deciding everything, but we will visit with some very dear friends and have some magical experiences in this place of yogic wisdom. We will visit a divine mother temple high in the Himalayas, have meditation and sacred ceremony by the Ganga and a visit to a few ashrams, including the Beatles Ashram, where the Beatles spent time with Maharishi Mahesh yogi and wrote so many songs!

Matura & Vrindhavan

For many this is the most sacred land in all of India. It is the land of Krishna’s birth and life and is sacred to vaishnavas and devotees of Krishna around the world. Much of the modern, western kirtan movement has its roots here, it is the land of bhakti, of Krishna & Radha. Mathura is the birthplace of Krishna and we will visit that exact place where he was born, where there is now a temple, I had one of the most powerful meditations that I have ever had in this place. It is also one of the most ancient temples to Bhumi, mother earth and we will  get to experience this amazing place firsthand. We will also get to participate in an ancient Gayatri fire ceremony, with embers from the fire going back over 800 years.

Vrindhavan is a special place, it is called the land of the bhakti yogi’s. This is such a busy area there are said to be over 5000 temples, it is a place where people come from all over India and all over the world to get a taste of the energy here. This is one of my favorite places, it is a little wild and crazy but full of devotion and beautiful spirit. We will have a busy few days here visiting temples, singing curtain and experiencing the hustle and bustle of bhakti Central.

Taj Mahal
One of the wonders of the world and truly a magical thing to behold. This will also be a place of pilgrimage for our group to visit this incredible beautiful ‘monument to love’ and learn it’s interesting and sad history. It will blow your mind.

South India

Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), 31 miles (50km) south of Chennai, was the major seaport of the ancient Pallava kingdom based at Kanchipuram. A wander around the town’s magnificent, World Heritage-listed temples and carvings inflames the imagination, especially at sunset. Ancient archaeological wonders, salty air and beauty make this a special place :)

Puducherry / Pondicherry
is City in south India next to the Indian ocean. It is a former French colony and boasts the best French bread and all of India! It also has a very powerful spiritual heritage, Sri Aurobindo  one of the great saints of India and founding fathers of the Indian independence movement lived here and we will visit his ashram. A place where i had a very powerful spiritual experience over 10 years ago, i wept tears of joy. There is also the town of Auroville which is an international community based on the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the mother. There are some wonderful temple sites and sounds in the city and it is also a jumping off point to visit the sacred Shiva temple of Chidambaram. This is one of the most important temples in all of India it is dedicated to the ether element and is a major pilgrimage point for all devotees of Lord Shiva. I went here 13 years ago and had a very powerful experience. We will visit some other wonderful places in and around this area.

Tiruvannammalai  is the town around the small mountain known as Arunachala. Arunachala is considered to be the most sacred Mountain in India by some and certainly viewed by all as one of the great sacred pilgrimage places in all of India. It is said that this mountain is an incarnation of Lord Shiva and saints and seers and yogis have been traveling here for thousands of years. Arunachala is actually the name of a local greeting and blessing that people share here. We will visit some of the powerful temples in this area as well as walk on pilgrimage around the mountain and take a hike up to the mountain. This is also the home of the famous Indian sage Ramana Maharshi who influenced so many people in the West. We will visit his samadhi, final resting place and ashram, one of the most peaceful shrines i have ever been too.  I also have some dear friends who live in this area who run a children’s orphanage, which we will get to visit. This is a bustling and magical spiritual place to visit in India.

Kanchipuram
On our way back to Chennai we will make a stop in Kanchipuram to have lunch and visit a famous Shiva temple here. This town has many beautiful old temples and historical places here and it is a wonderful stop for lunch on our way to Chennai.

Chennai / Madras
Chennai, formerly Madras, city, capital of Tamil Nadu state, southern India, located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Known as the “Gateway to South India,” Chennai is a major administrative and cultural centre. Pop. (2011) city, 4,646,732; urban agglom., 8,696,010. Chennai is located on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal. How many temples here and many beautiful parts of the city, we will not be spending much time here but our last evening, celebration dinner. For those of you that will have some time to sightsee we will have a little time to visit some of the sites in the city. The food here is amazing and there’s even a curry named after Madras!

So this is a taste of what we will experience in India.
I am very happy to help you with arrangements and ideas as you travel on or arrive early. Please reach out.
